“I’m too old to learn English.” I hear this surprisingly often.
And after more than twenty years of teaching adults, I don’t believe it.
Adults sometimes think they are at a disadvantage because they don’t learn languages as quickly as children. But learning a language isn’t a race, and speed isn’t everything.
Adults have something children don’t: life experience.
You already have a vocabulary of your own. You understand how conversations work. You know how to express an opinion, tell a story, explain a problem or make a joke.
You also know what you want.
A child may learn English because their parents told them to. An adult might learn it because they want to lead a meeting confidently, travel more easily, communicate with international colleagues or simply stop feeling nervous when speaking.
That is a very powerful motivation.
Adults can also make connections between things. If I explain a new expression, you can connect it to something you already know or to a situation you have experienced.
And there is another advantage.
You don’t need to learn everything.
You don’t need to know every word in the dictionary or every grammar rule. You need the English that is useful for your life.
This is particularly important for busy professionals. You may not have an hour every day to study vocabulary. But you can have a regular conversation in English, listen to a podcast on your way to work or learn a few useful expressions that you can actually use. That is often much more effective than trying to memorise hundreds of words.
Of course, adults can have one disadvantage: we tend to worry more about making mistakes. Children usually say something, get it wrong and carry on.
Adults say something, realise it wasn’t perfect and sometimes spend the next five minutes thinking about it.
Don’t.
Making mistakes is not a sign that your English is bad. It is a sign that you are using it.
After all these years of teaching, I have seen many adults make much more progress than they expected – not because they suddenly became brilliant at languages, but because they stopped waiting until their English was perfect. They simply started using it.
If you have been telling yourself that you are too old, too busy or simply “not good at languages”, perhaps it is time to reconsider.
You may be a much better language learner than you think.
