Dry January, Dry February… What About Dry March?

Are you doing Dry January or Dry February? Here are some fascinating facts about these alcohol-free challenges that might surprise you:

  1. It All Started in the UK. Dry January became a tradition in the UK developed and delivered by Alcohol Change UK. In 2014, they revived an older campaign, trademarked “Dry January,” and since then, it has inspired millions to start the new year alcohol-free. In its first year, 4,000 people signed up for the Dry January challenge and it has grown in popularity ever since with 215,000 people globally signing up to take part in 2024.
  2. A Historical Perspective. Think the idea of an alcohol-free month is a modern invention? Think again! Back in 1942, during World War II, the Finnish government launched the “Sober January” campaign as part of their war effort against the Soviet Union.
  3. Why Dry February in the Czech Republic? While the British focus on January, Czechs abstain in February with “Suchej únor” (Dry February). Why February? Some say it’s because it’s the shortest month of the year – easier to get through. But the real reason, according to the organisers, is much simpler: “We decided in January 2013 to start the challenge the very next month, so February it was. And yes, we trademarked it too!”
  4. Global Variations. The idea of going dry isn’t just a British or Czech phenomenon. In Australia and New Zealand, for instance, they do “Dry July.” So while we might be sipping on wine or beer in the summer, our friends Down Under are taking a break from booze.
  5. Health Benefits. Going alcohol-free isn’t just a test of willpower, it comes with real benefits. A 2019 study by the University of Sussex found that participants in Dry January reported better sleep, increased energy, weight loss, and improved concentration. More than 70% of them also reduced their alcohol consumption long-term.

How about you? Are you doing a dry month this year? And have you noticed any of the benefits?
